Our Finance Masterclass went ‘virtual’ when more than 20 leaders of Buckinghamshire-based businesses tuned in on Zoom on May 20 and spent the best part of the working day with us.
The Masterclass, which helps business leaders get to grips with vital knowledge and techniques around numbers and funding, had to be reshaped to maintain attention and interest over such a long time at the computer screen.
New interactive elements such as snap polls and breakout rooms were added, and our presenters – Adam Stronach, Tom Gooder and Amandeep Dhillon – shared the content delivery and ‘roamed’ the breakout rooms offering guidance during the set exercises.
Adam admitted to being apprehensive about the format and how well it would be received. “There is a lot to take on board, and it’s tricky to find the right level in discussions when so many businesses of different types and sizes are involved,” he said. “The Zoom break-out rooms allowed us to cluster similar-sized businesses for the exercises, and that was very helpful.”
Feedback from the attendees was very encouraging. Unusually for the Masterclass, Rhys Jones of marketing consultancy Retail Alchemy has a finance background and he was worried the session might be a bit too basic for him. “However, I found it very useful and informative, especially around what investors/banks look for when trying to secure funding. It has given me lots of food for thought about how we might finance future growth.”
Joy Lock-Schierning of textiles specialist Bluebell Label said it was great to get together with other businesses. “Getting the books right is tricky, and it was empowering to work together in improving our knowledge on managing our businesses finances,” she said.
Ian Murphy, of Bullet & Bone, a firm which makes personal care products designed to enhance sports performance, said it was a “long and intense day” but praised us for how we’d adapted to Zoom. “It was well worth attending, and lots of valuable insights were generated,” he said.
The next Finance Masterclass will be in September and it looks likely we will using Zoom again.
The Masterclass is supported by Buckinghamshire Business First and is free of charge to qualifying businesses. If you would like to know more, click here.
