Ian Worth
Head of Customs Consultancy
Ian is former Head of Customs at Grant Thornton and managing director of Gerlach UK, the customs services division of DHL UK. He joined Harwood Hutton in March 2018.

Ian’s mission is to help clients save money, and he can do this in a number of ways: by eliminating unnecessary customs duty costs through intelligent duty planning; by recovering overpaid customs duties; by reducing the burden of compliance with Customs regulations; and by challenging unfavourable decisions by Customs authorities.

Among his many skills, Ian is an expert in tariff classifications – at Delphi, he was responsible for the accurate classifications across the EMEA region for more than 300,000 automotive parts – and at Grant Thornton he guided clients through the Authorised Economic Operator process which leads to ‘trusted trader’ status.

He can also advise on duty reliefs and suspension arrangements, deferment accounts, customs warehousing and the general customs efficiency of any given supply chain.

“Brexit is going to be the dominant theme for the next couple of years without question,” said Ian. “UK Customs is expecting the number of annual customs declarations to rise from the current level of around 50 million to 350 million a year, while at the same time imposing customs obligations for the first time on more than 130,000 UK businesses.

“My priority will be to educate businesses on the threats and, more important, prepare for the opportunities ahead.”
