Harwood Hutton Customs Consultancy presents a half-day of essential training – potentially free – for businesses that need to prepare for the new world of imports and exports that starts on January 1, 2021.

With Brexit looming, it is vital to understand the customs procedures required for trading goods between mainland Europe and the UK.

Our half-day training course will help delegates understand how customs requirements affect their business both now and in the light of changes brought about by Brexit.

Our experts will walk you through the thinking and the steps required not just to make your business compliant but to leverage its full potential under the new regime.

The course is £295 per delegate but a 100% refund is available in the form of a government grant, although you must meet the qualifying criteria (see Grants section below).


What we cover

Harwood Hutton’s experts will explain how customs duty works, how to complete customs declarations and what reliefs are available. We will also be covering:

  • Customs compliance obligations
  • Customs essentials – classification, valuation and rules of origin
  • How to benefit from customs planning
  • Tax and duty reliefs overview
  • Incoterms
  • How to deal with a customs audit
  • Transitioning to HMRC’s new CDS (Customs Declaration Service) system
  • Roles and responsibilities of other players in the supply chain

There will be a 30-minute question-and answer session during which you can share your individual challenges and concerns and receive guidance.

Our experts

The training will be delivered by Ian Worth (pictured below) and Monil Shah of Harwood Hutton Customs Consultancy. Ian has almost 40 years’ experience of customs, in which he has worked for HMRC, Big4 consultancy firms, industry and customs brokerage. He is also a member of ACITA, the Customs Practitioners Group and the Institute of Export and International Trade, and regularly participates in meetings of the Joint Customs Consultative Committee.



Grant criteria

Where businesses undertake import or export activity, with obligations to make customs declarations, the training can be fully funded by the UK Government, while funding continues to be available. The business must:

  • be established in, or have a branch in the UK when the grant is paid to you
  • not have previously failed to meet its tax obligations

Furthermore, the business must either:

  • complete customs declarations for yourself or someone else (or intend to in the future)
  • import from, or export to the EU and complete customs declarations (or intend to complete customs declarations in the future)

The cost of the course is £295 +VAT per delegate. You will receive instructions at the event on how to reclaim the training cost from the Government.
